Held every year April 14th - 19th in Milan, Italy, Salone Del Mobile celebrates excellence in furniture craftsmanship and artistic vision. The exhibition invites top vendors from around the world to set up and display their finest wares at the Fiera Milano complex, encouraging both industry insiders and interested spectators to join in the spectacle.
This year, designer COS has returned to the event, commissioning Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen of Snarkitecture to create a very special installation inspired by its SS15 collection. Consisting of thousands of strips of white fabric hung floor to ceiling in the Spazio Erbe, the creation will resemble vast caverns, enveloping entrants in a sea of layered textile. The designers are emphasizing the interactive nature of the installation, encouraging participants to experience it both visually and with their tactile senses.
Snarkitecture was a clear choice for the COS collaboration because of “their simplistic yet modern concept,” according to Karin Gustafsson, Head of Womenswear Design. “Thedesignof the installation transforms the space and evokes a sense of relaxationand tranquility, making it a comfortable and enjoyable space for visitors to spend time in,” added Martin Andersson, Head of Menswear Design.
Arsham and Mustonen met with Gustafsson and Andersson to discuss their vision and take a look at COS SS15, saying afterword that, “We knew we wanted to create a revelatory experience that played with shifting views and translucency through the use of luminous material. What we came up with is an immersive environment that draws on the familiar qualities of fabric and the primal nature of caverns to create a world of reflection, exploration and interaction.” The idea is to blur the line between the spectator and the creation, cultivating a deeper understanding of the artistic vision.
If you happen to be in Milan between April 14th and 19th this year, head over to the Brera art district and check out this wondrous installation for yourself.
