Minimal, quirky and straight to the point, all uniquely describe the work of artist Alessio Franceschetto, a superhero of graphic art. He juggles his day job as a Visual Designer at Paul Smith with his night occupation, creating artwork that he has been uploading to Instagram since March 2016. Alessio’s take on pop art is always– we dare say– “super” colorful like vividly drawn superheroes on vibrant comic book pages.
The artist hijacks popular imagery and symbols familiar to everyone, mixes them up, and transform the motif into new original designs. In Alessio’s hands, a slice of pizza becomes a wifi logo, nail polish is changed into ketchup, the Instagram logo is reimagined as a washing machine, and a box of matches portrays potato fries. The artist’s imagination seems to have no limits. Just by looking to his surroundings, Franceschetto is able to see beyond the known and unquestioned use of things and remodel them with drollery.
For as long as he can remember, the graphic designer always liked to draw. Designing came naturally to the young creative, and after dropping out of college, he started a t-shirt brand with a friend. In 2012, Alessio moved to London where he now shares his time and talent between designing window graphics and computer visuals for Paul Smith, and publishing witty pop art for the world to enjoy. Always funny and sometimes absurd, Alessio presents his view on the ordinary around us, leaving it up to his followers to guess the possible meaning. Is the picture of a can of Fanta, cut in half to reveal an orange, attempting to make a statement about the way our society perceives food? Perhaps, his play with wood and toilet paper is addressing deforestation, or the melting, Earth-flavored ice cream cone is a remark on climate change. Is Franceschetto’s work a satire or simple observations?
