"One Year of Resistance" Recalls an Unsettling Year Under President Trump

During President Trump’s inauguration week, curator Indira Cesarine hosted a group art exhibition entitled Uprise / Angry Women in response to the election. Cesarine’s curation of all-female artists focused on Trump’s demonstrated misogyny and sexism and the future of women’s rights. And as a startling year has elapsed, Cesarine has again curated an extensive group exhibit of anti-Trump art at The Untitled Space in New York City. The exhibition, appropriately titled One Year of Resistance, broadens the scope of its predecessor. Submissions were accepted from artists of all ages and genders, and the diversity of their backgrounds presented a powerful collage of the span of issues that President Trump has threatened– from reproductive rights, gender and racial equality, to immigration, environmental protection, and gun control. One Year of Resistance features over 80 artists, and much of the art was specifically created for the showing, truly a celebration of art as activism. A portion of proceeds from the exhibit will go to benefit the ACLU.
The turnout to the opening reception on Tuesday was significant, and a long queue formed outside of the quaint Tribeca gallery. One can only suspect that the publicity and attendance of this reception grew with each passing Tweet and publicized remark of President Trump, verbal attacks and vulgarities to which the country has become disturbingly numb.
The gallery walls are teeming with art and are almost puzzle-like. The pieces displayed are also unmistakably close to their creators, and the level of intimacy taken to the range of topics constituting our current cultural shock is an overwhelming experience. Artists responded with sadness and seriousness, but also with humor, irony, and with calls for strength and solidarity.
