Y & S: Incubator for Young Artists

April 18, 2013 5:18 PM

A foot in the door. That is what Y&S promises.

Founded by a group of young art fanatics, Young and Starving is a non-profit organization committed to helping young artists realize their dreams of making an impact -- or rent, with the main goal to make the art world more accessible for both young artists as well as young audiences. By organizing shows, studio visits, and gallery talks, Y&S provides the resources and publicity for new and deserving talent.

Eliza Coven and Vivian Brodie talk to TWELV about making their mission a reality.

Y&S recently had it's first show. How did it go?

We were very pleased with the results of our first show. Every artist had a piece sold and we had a very large turnout for the event. In that sense, we accomplished what we set out to accomplish -- supporting emerging artists and engaging a new, young audience.

Y&S is concerned with making the art world more accessible to the young and less experienced artist and audience. When you started your company, did you have any such help navigating what must be very intimidating waters for a group of young, relatively inexperienced people? How did you make Y&S a reality?

Y&S became a reality over a period of about two years. It took that long to recognize what it was that we wanted to accomplish, as well as a way to do so. We have been very lucky to have a lot of support from outside mentors, both inside and outside of the art world. The intimidating waters that you mention are exactly why we established Y&S, and it is amazing what positive and open responses come when you say that you want to help young artists, and engage a young group of people.

How do you select the artists that you support? Is there something in particular you're looking for?

For this first show, we found artists primarily through word of mouth from both artists and friends, with a few submissions. Going forward, with a bit of a base now, we would like to accept submissions. When looking at the art and the artists, especially because of everyone's age, it was very important to us that these artists were committed to their practice and a language. Maybe their style is not entirely developed, but the iconography and language was a definite factor.

Tell us about your collaboration with Christies and THAT NEW NEW.

Over the past six months THAT NEW NEW has developed a web series titled "NEW NEW YORK" focused on the lives of young, innovative New Yorkers working in various cultural industries. Our collaboration with THAT NEW NEW was to be featured in one of their New New York episodes. Essentially, THAT NEW NEW's Ben Clotten filmed us on three of our studio visits with artists that were exhibited in our first show at Christie's. The episode very much describes what Y&S is all about, and gives a window into our process as an organization. Most importantly, however, the episode gives the audience an introduction to the three artists -- Mat Larkin, Adam Payne, and Samuel Stabler. Our collaboration with Christie's and their First Open sale was our first exhibition. Saara Pritchard, the head of the First Open sale, offered us an opportunity to put on a show and silent auction in conjunction with the First Open sale, in the shared goal of engaging a young audience. Neither Christie's nor Y&S benefited from the sale of the works, and the proceeds went directly back to the artists to support their practice.

What should we expect from Y&S in the future?

In the future you can expect happenings, gallery talks, studio visits and more exhibitions...You will be the first to know!
