Art Basel Takes Miami

Art Basel heated up Miami this December for its annual showcase of contemporary and modern art. Held every year, Art Basel sets up in three locations: Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Miami. At the Miami Beach Convention Center, artwork was brought to the public from galleries, private collections, public sections and artists to provide a five-day extravaganza of modern and contemporary art. Top galleries from all over the world including Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa and North America showcased their historical work alongside new pieces by up-and-coming artists.
From December 3 – 7, almost 200 galleries and institutions showcased everything from sculptures, paintings, and photography in Miami for 73,000 visitors. Among the galleries that were present were 303 Gallery, Hammer Gallery, Hirschl & Adler Modern and hundreds more.
Dividing up and organizing all these artworks were nine sectors on display: Galleries, Nova, Positions, Edition, Kabinett, Public, Survey, Film, and Magazines. These sectors allowed visitors to visit different themes within Miami’s Art Basel. Sectors like Nova showcased often never-before-seen pieces from artists, while Public displayed performances and over 26 large-scale outdoor sculptures. Positions allowed curators and critics to exhibit works from newer artists. Meanwhile, premiering for the first time in 2014 was the Survey sector which showed 13 historical-art pieces.
Among the artist and pieces showcased at these various sectors were Ryan McNamara’s immersive internet-inspired ballet piece “ME3M 4 Miami,” Juan Genoves’ optical illusion of pedestrians at a crosswalk in “Trayetca,” Jessica Stockholder’s outdoor installation “Angled Triangle,” Nuria Fuster’s tethered-down basketballs in “Pump iron,” and Biksimo’s metallic dog wall mural just to name a few.
Art Basel wasn’t just about seeing art, but hearing it. Miami’s Art Basel held morning lectures throughout the fair to discuss a wide range of topics like the artistic process and learning about the art market. Additionally afternoon salons were held for short, informal presentations including panels and performances with prominent figures in the art world from academics, collectors, art lawyers, critics, curators and more.
Nestled at the nexus of Latin and North America, Miami’s Art Basel was the place to be for art lovers to immerse themselves in the latest, international art pieces. Didn’t catch it? Don’t worry, Miami is already gearing up for next year’s Art Basel which will take place from December 3 – 5, 2015.
