Cairo Dwek left behind her life as a model in Los Angeles to pursue her aspiration of becoming a fine artist.
ART BASEL DIARY #3
For our third day at Art Basel, we figured it was time to visit Miami’s Convention Center where the majority of galleries were represented. This is also where many collectors (both private and public) purchase pieces each year.
The center was full of families, couples, friends, and business partners admiring art, asking questions, taking photos, and chatting with exhibitors. Some of the pieces were older and familiar; others were so new that this was probably the first time they were on display to the public.
TWELV’s favorites included one of Robert Mapplethorpe’s photographs of Lisa Lyon from 1982; Tracey Emin’s “The Last Great Sdventure is you” neon writing from 2013; William de Koonig’s “League” from 1964; Jack Pierson’s “Motherfucker” sign from 2012; Jenny Holzer’s “Surivival” video from 1989 and her white marble footstool from the same series “Survival: Men Do Not Protect” from 2006.
After a delicious dinner at BLT Steak on Ocean Drive, TWELV attended a rooftop party at The Betsy Hotel where we had the pleasure of meeting fashion and costume designer Emilio Sosa. Mr. Sosa, made famous by the popular show “Project Runway”, mingled with guests as he explained his time as the artist in residence at the Betsy and what it was like for him to visit Art Basel as a designer.
Following receipt of an invitation from One Management for their rooftop party honoring VS Magazine and Scott Lipps’ book “Poplipps”, TWELV knew we needed to make an appearance. The rooftop party did not disappoint with beautiful views, great music, and festive cocktails on top of the Townhouse Hotel. Model Chloe Norgaard could be seen walking around and taking photos, pointing to herself on the book’s cover and laughing at how her electric hair seemed to glow even at night.
That’s all for today dear readers! Will be exploring more of Miami tomorrow…
