Here is a story of transformation, of a man born and bred in Harlem, who spent nights sleeping on park benches, who lost best friends through brutal violence but still persevered to become an anime artist filled with inspiration and intentions to better others. Here is the story of Parnell Jones.
Parnell walks in, a towering 6 foot plus of a man, yet in his eyes gentleness and a passion waiting to be unleashed. Two years ago, Parnell started embarking on his anime journey but that was not where the road began. His eyes light up as he describes food that taste great, music that defines moments in life, movies and cartoons that draw out smiles. These are his inspirations, the good, along with the heartaches, the pains, and the failures. He marries the concepts of hip hop culture with Japanese anime and from that Yindi Yiogashi was born.
Metaseishin is the name of the anime, the main character is half human, half spirit. It tells a story of a transformation both physical and spiritual - a metamorphosis of spirit and body. It is a journey of a young boy who has lost his father, embarking on a journey through love and lost to become a warrior. The story is filled with twists and turns including a love interest who has an possessive and evil twin brother. The plot is engaging and not unlike the journey of humanity with the exploration of fears and the omnipotence of love.
So far Parnell has finished the first episode of the anime series and is in the process of pitching to animation production companies. It’s a long road to create a finished anime, but where most people would have given up, Parnell is still going strong perhaps because courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to face it.
