The Met Looks East: Chinese Heritage And Its Influence On Fashion
Mirror mirror on the wall, show the most fashionable country of them all. The Metropolitan Museum of Art plans to do just that in spring 2015 where it will display China: Through the Looking Glass. To celebrate the Department of Asian Art’s 100th anniversary, the exhibit will reflect on different Chinese cultural traditions and aesthetics that have influenced fashion. Displayed in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, over one hundred avant-garde ready-to-wear and haute-couture designs, from the 1700s to present day, will be featured next to Chinese art.
Also juxtaposed next to the Chinese paintings, costumes, and porcelain will be film representations from Chinese directors like Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou. The Met plans to incorporate films to show how “visions of China are framed by narratives that draw upon popular culture” as well as the importance of “cinema as a medium through which to understand the richness of Chinese history.”
The exhibit will travel through time to focus on different eras in China including Imperial China, Shanghai in the 1920-1940s, and the People’s Republic of China. In conjunction with the exhibit, Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence will co-host the 2015 Met Ball in order to celebrate the opening of China: Through the Looking Glass.
Noted designers featured in the exhibit include Anna Sui, Jason Wu, Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen for Givenchy, Dries van Noten, and Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazai Chiuri.
China: Through the Looking Glass opens May 7, 2015 and runs until August 16, 2015. The exhibit is sponsored by Yahoo with support from Condé Nast.
