A new exhibition at the Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice explores Coco Chanel’s life through her love for literature, her life living amongst artists, and her own writing career.
The seventh edition of Culture Chanel focuses on the designer’s personal relationship to books, artists, and authors through archival material from her personal library. The display includes over 350 of Chanel’s personal correspondences as well as photographs, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and perfume. She truly enjoyed having close relationships with key intellectuals of her age, and this exhibit showcases how they influenced her designs.
Chanel told her friend Paul Morand that books have always been her best friends. For her entire life, Chanel relied on reading as an escape, and now we can escape into her exceptional life with this beautiful gallery.
From surrealist poets to Dadaist art, there are many highlights of this exhilarating exhibition. One of Chanel’s closet allies was Misia Sert, an important figure in the artistic circles of Paris. Thus, there is a fan showcased with Stéphane Mallarmé’s copied verses, gifted to Misia Sert herself. Other pieces include an intricate sketch of the designer by Jean Cocteau and Dada flyers presented alongside the cult Chanel N°5 logos, illustrating comparisons between the now infamous emblem and the aesthetic of the Dada texts.
Culture Chanel, La Donna Che Legge, is running from September 17, 2016 until January 8, 2017. If you find yourself in Italy, Venice is the place to be for this rare experience.
