The film aims to ignite a creative spark – artists and cultural figures explore their personal processes in an attempt to inspire others. ILLY continues to pride itself in its rooted commitment with the arts, and strives to establish a wonderful coffee experience for its customers. Immediately tying the brand into art, artist JAMES ROSENQUIST and the ILLY ART COLLECTION created the ILLY logo. The ILLY ART COLLECTION, launched in 1992, now includes more than 70 collections from artist contributors including MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO, FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, WILLIAM KENTRIDGE, JEFF KOONS, and more.
The short film opens with glimpses into the minds of artists: from snippets of JAMES FRANCO intimately working on his painting to MIKE KELLEY’s show at MoMA’s PS1, the film’s first few minutes lures the viewer in with beautiful art pieces.
FRANCO opens up the short by explaining his environment: in a trailer on a movie set, wearing a backwards robe to substitute a smock, and is on his lunch break. He speaks to the interviewer as his paintbrush traces the upper eyelid of his portrait, allowing liquid paint to flawlessly trickle. His portraits often reflect actors in films as a “way of generating more work from a single project.”
“I think movies and performances and characters are very good ways of looking at who we are,” FRANCO comments, his eyes intent on his current work. He quickly flicks his brush back and fourth, paying little attention to the camera.
Watch ILLY’s INSPIRING CREATIVITY as the film features DIANA PICASSO, HANS ZIMMER, INEZ VAN LAMSWEERDE, VINOODH MATADIN, JAMES FRANCO, JOAN SMALLS, JOHAN LINDEBERG, JONAS MEKAS, HANS ULRICH OBRIST, KAREN ELSON, KARIM RASHID, KLAUS BIESENBACH, LEE DANIELS, LOLA MONTES SCHNABEL, MARILYN MINTER, NICO MUHLY, MARK ROMANEK, TRACEY EMIN, MOBY, PAUL SCHRADER, and RICHARD SAUL WURMAN.
