Public School: Success in a Nutshell
Being considerably new to the fashion world as individual designers, the founders of Public School has definitely gotten off to a smooth start. After just 5 years in the business, their brand has received more recognition than most designers could only dream of having.
Public School is an up-and-coming brand from New York born and raised designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne. They use their NYC upbringing as an inspiration for their designs. Public School was founded in 2008 and made entirely in the New York’s garment district. Their ultimate goal is to redefine the view on men’s tailored sportswear, and so far they are doing a great job.
Public School has deservedly received praise from several major fashion publications, such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Details, and Esquire. They were chosen by the CFDA back in 2010 to be in their inaugural fashion incubator program, giving the designers a huge step forward in the fashion world as their recognition rocketed through the roof. After years of hard work, their designs won the prestigious CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear in March 2013.
Dao-Yi and Maxwell aim to find perfection in imperfections, updating classic styles and mixing aspects from fashion, music and art through their work. For Fall/Winter ’13, Public School combines luxury fabrics such as waxed cotton with merino shearling and lamb skin with melton wool. Their signature silhouettes, like their stretch leather and ponte vest and ankle-length slash pocket pants, are designed for the cultural and modern man.
The two friends, who had been working together at Sean John for five years, started to talk about starting their own brand in 2007, and less than a year later the idea had become reality when they launched in a collaboration with Barneys New York. Co-founder Maxwell said in a interview with Barney’s The Window that: ”We weren’t that excited with what was out there; we couldn’t find clothing that we wanted to wear ourselves.” And what better way to get satisfied with the fashion out there than making the clothes yourself? These two gentlemen definitely made the right decision making their own brand, and we are looking forward to see what the future will bring for these two magnificent artists.
