Small Data, Large Impact: Daniel Canogar Presents Discarded Electronics
Earlier this year, New York gallery bitforms presented Daniel Canogar’s Small Data. Composed of “nine video projection-mapped objects that are intimate in scale,” Canogar explored society’s relationship with its ever-growing technological advances. Known for using discarded electronics in his art, Canogar gathered old TV remotes, CDs, keyboards, calculators, and smashed cell phones from recycling centers and junkyards to literally shine a light on what society has left behind in search for the latest technological item.
Individually placed on shelves under bright, colored lights, the discarded electronics brought the viewer back to the intimate nature they might have once shared with these objects. With Canogar’s lights and video projections, the electronics appeared to reanimate in attempt to bring yesterday’s technology back to the present. Where these items once made large impacts in people’s lives, they had since been reduced to garbage due to necessity or in favor of the next, latest item. Canogar said “buying the latest gadget makes us feel like sophisticated citizens of the digital age, yet these technologies break down or are rendered obsolete at a fast pace.”
The exhibit called for more than nostalgia, it was also about reminiscing. By exploring the life and death of electronics, Canogar showed how discarding electronics meant one discarded a piece of themselves in the process. The display of used electronics was also meant to bring back memories of when the owner used it and reminded the viewer that the objects were once fully functional and at the time, as important as today’s newest iPhone or television remote. The decayed electronics were a representation of us, a reminder “of our own aging process and inevitable expiration date.” Thus Canogar left the exhibit with the message that small data doesn’t make a small impact, but rather a large one.
