PERCEIVING THE UNKNOWN: THE BLACK SOFT INTRODUCES BELOW 14TH STREET
Olafur Eliasson’s Gravity Stairs: A Journey Through Alternate Realities
Art is especially impactful when spectators are drawn in beyond simply viewing from a distance. The wall between the work and the audience can be alienating, diminishing the potential understanding and enjoyment of the experience.
Olafur Eliasson’s latest large-scale installation at the Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul seeks to eliminate some of these hindrances. Viewers are invited on a tour of the solar system via a sprawling staircase and massive illuminated rings arranged to scale. Attendees walk the length of the staircase enveloped in the warm glow of the lights and dwarfed by the massive planetary designs hovering above. Mirrors on the ceiling and wall create parallel universes, through which Eliasson hopes to illustrate the interconnectedness of the human race. Each visitor affects the piece in his or her own unique way, therefore receiving it individually as well; the artist seeks to cultivate layers of appreciation for the subjectivity of his work.
