Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirty exhibition

Starting November 4, 2016, the public will have the chance to admire the retrospective of Marilyn Minter's work at the Brooklyn Museum. Although Minter has already been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions, this will be her first retrospective. After unveiling at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston last year, Marilyn Minter: Pretty/Dirtytraveled to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Orange Country Museum of Art in Newport Beach, California. In a few days, the exhibition will make its way to New York, featuring more than 45 paintings, 3 videos, and over a dozen photographs made between 1969 and 2015– the perfect occasion to discover a new side of the painter, photographer, film-maker, and feminist artist.
New-Yorkers may have spotted some of Minter's work around the city in the last few years, such as her video “Green Pink Caviar” in the lobby of the MoMA in 2010, which was also shown on the Creative Time MTV billboard in Times Square. Other New York exhibitions include the Whitney Biennial and billboard installations in Chelsea, as a collaboration with Creative Time in 2006. She is well-known for provocative glossy images of female sexuality, but people are often not very familiar with her earlier work. This exhibition presents a series of intimate photographs of the artist's mother from 1969 to 1986, as well as pop-art inspired paintings from the mid-1980s that focus on the female body, in typical Minter fashion. The exhibition includes work up until the present, the more recent of which is critical of the media and its connection to fashion in mainstream culture. Following a feminist line for almost five decades now, Minter never ceases to question how our society perceives the female body and the ambiguous relationship society holds to beauty and desire.
Marilyn Minter's work used to be considered « pornographic » in the 1990s, as if the vision of a full female body should remain in the private sphere and not be freely shown, like a taboo. The idea seems so old, almost of ancient times, and we so badly wish it was, yet alas, when we still witness misogynistic comments on a daily basis, when men continue to objectify women, even blatantly in the public, political sphere, and when women sometimes still fail to support each other against these behaviors, Minter's work serves as a voice that sheds light on these serious social issues that our world must face.
The exhibition is a part of a year-long project celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art and a decade of feminist thinking at the Brooklyn Museum, entitled Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum. This project uses feminist art of the last half-century as a lens into what may lie ahead in the future of the feminist movement. You will have until April 2, 2017, to go appreciate Marilyn Minter's work at the Brooklyn Museum and reflect on the female body and its storied history in society.
