Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style Exhibition

Years before the term “It Girl” become a thing, one woman, Jaqueline de Ribes, had already given it meaning. From playing dress up as a kid, to becoming a muse to many esteemed fashion designers – such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul-Gaultier, and Pierre Balmain, among notable others – to creating her own design business, De Ribes was considered the personification of the Parisian elegance, she was among the very few ladies photographed by Richard Avedon and written about by Truman Capote in 1959.
Her collection of dresses consisted of various handmade pieces and designer pieces that she modified according to her aesthetics. This collection is now part of the exhibit: Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style, on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exhibition will feature about 60 haute couture designs and ready-to-wear pieces from Jaqueline’s collection dated from 1959 to the present. The exhibition will focus on her taste and style methodology. Extensive documents from her personal archives will illustrate the range and depth of her professional life, including her roles as theatrical impresario, television producer, interior designer, architect, director, and organizer of international charity events.
According to Harold Koda, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, “a close study of de Ribes’s life of creative expression yields illuminating insights into her strategies of style,” Koda also says that “her approach to dress as a statement of individuality can be seen as a kind of performance art. When she established her own fashion house, her friend Yves Saint Laurent gave his blessing to the venture as a welcome projection of her elegance." The exhibit can be seen in the Anna Wintour Costume Center, at The MET, from November 19th, 2015 through February 21st, 2016.
