Invader Invades the Earth with Street Art

Invader is a mystery. People don’t know his real name. They also don't know what he looks like. Nonetheless, this French artist’s street art is among some of the most recognizable examples of the genre. “I have never been tempted to reveal my identity,” Invader said. “What I do and create is more important than who exactly I am.”
If you are wandering in the New York City, you’ve probably seen a few pixel art mosaics, in the form of aliens coming out from the 1978’s famous Space Invaders arcade game. Yes, those are Invader’s works! They are actually all over the world. According to Invader’s website, so far he has installed 3331 invaders in 65 cities across the globe, in which 215 can be found in New York. Recently, it seems that his plan is not only limited to invade the earth. One of his works just went outside into the space, located at the International Space Station.
Invader’s initial inspiration was indeed coming from the game, Space Invaders. His idea is to free the characters from the video game screens and bring them to the real physical world. He deploys his creatures on the wall using strong cement to plaster ceramic tiles. So on one hand they give a pixelated appearance, while on the other hand, they are very hard to be stolen.
We noticed that some invaders in fact look quite different from the aliens in Space Invaders. “I have rapidly developed new models and created totally original icons. My creatures are now quite detached from the four original Taito creatures,” He explains, “For example, I recently created a Pink Panther, a Mona Lisa or a Peter Pan.”
This whole Invasion project is also a game for Invader himself. For each mosaic he puts up, he scores it depending on how big it is, where it is located, and how difficult is it to reach the spot. He created a map on his website so that everyone can see the total points he has earned, the points for each city, and the points for every piece. What makes the game more interesting is that he does not provide the specific location of his creatures, but only one photo for each. It is our job to hunt the invaders!
