ART BASEL DIARY #1

December 05, 2013 4:29 PM

Art Basel has been taking over Miami Beach since 2002 with its extravagant exhibitions and events, making it a go-to destination for art and culture lovers everywhere. The fair boasts art from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia by incorporating new and well-known artists pieces together. The show’s goal of promoting Modern and contemporary artists’ work and practices’ infiltrates the crowds with fun, emotional, and challenging pieces, all available for purchase.

While the shows are not free to attend, they are definitely worth the time and money. If you’re lucky, you might even get to brush shoulders with some of the greats (like TWELV did with architect Jacques Herzog of Herzog and De Meuron)!

On TWELV’s first day of Art Basel, we decided that Colette’s pop up store would be our first destination. As big fans of the shop in Paris, we knew we would not be disappointed. Upon arrival at the “drive thru” located on the 5th floor of a parking garage, we were greeted by pretty girls on roller skates, identifying the iPads where we could purchase exclusive Art Basel merchandise made exclusively for the event by artists like Damien Hirst, Pharrel Williams, and Takashi Murakami. The pop up was co-sponsored by the Alchemist store, a Lincoln Road landmark of designer clothing and accessories, situated next door to Colette, allowing attendees to admire Chrome Hearts, Saint Laurent, and Christian Dior merchandise indicative of the Colette in Paris.

After visiting Colette and spending some much needed R&R on the beach, we headed to Juvia for a luxurious rooftop dinner overlooking Ocean Drive. After having the best lychee martini ever, we headed to the Bass Museum of Art to indulge in a little more art appreciation.

The museum was packed with people, enjoying the collections inside and sipping champagne outside on the patio. The main show featured work by Piotr Uklański entitled ESL, identified the Polish artist’s journey as an immigrant in America and what it was like having “English as a Second Language”. The pieces were defined by tie-dye, embroidery, and embellishments on many different mediums including film, photographs, paintings, paper reliefs, and installation pieces.

That’s all for today, dear readers; check back tomorrow to read more about TWELV’s adventures in Miami Beach!
