OSCAR DE LA RENTA: AN AMERICAN ICON

For decades now, Oscar de la Renta has been synonymous with pure American luxury, dressing the upper-east side’s ladies who lunch, Hollywood’s red carpet, and first ladies from Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis to Hillary Clinton. Appropriately, a retrospective of the designer’s career will be on display at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum this month and expected to make a tour to the George W. Bush Library in Texas and the Reagan Library in California. The Andre Leon Talley curated exhibit features forty iconic dresses arranged thematically highlighting the designer’s oeuvre. Hillary Clinton recently told Vogue, “Oscar de la Renta is the ultimate statesman of American fashion. His name alone evokes shimmering elegance and timeless beauty,” making it all the more appropriate that de la Renta has served as president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Politically bipartisan, remaining true to “current” America, de la Renta has proudly outfitted the liberal Hillary Clinton as well as the conservatives Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush. Appropriately, the American supermodel Karlie Kloss has been the face of the brand opening and closing his most recent runway collection. “Oscar de la Renta: An American Icon,” is an homage to America’s fashion history and an exhibit that shouldn’t be missed!
