BernHard Willhelm has always been on the cutting edge of quirky high-fashion. From endless post-modern references in his work, his collections are cheeky, playful, fun, and definitely not for the faint of heart. In presenting his SS’13 collection, Willhelm collaborated with digital artist Geoffrey Lillemon and Amsterdam’s Random Studio creating a collection of animated GIF’s for an online lookbook.
While GIF’s have been popping up in the high fashion world again (maybe its all the ‘90’s nostalgia that’s been wafting, lately), Willhelm’s collab with Lillemon stands out by utilizing Faceshift software technology. Faceshift allows model’s facial expressions to be included in the animation, adding a truly emotive element to the conventional fashion photograph. The technique is showcased in the accompanying, appropriately titled, “Facial” video as well. The model-avatars dance, spin, and bop in a candy-flipping friendly environment, enjoying the clothes, just as would any actual fashion-minded club kid. Psychadelic prints are abound: kaleidoscopic crystalline zebra prints meld with black and white printed shirts, pants and skirts featuring $, ¥, and €’s endlessly reflected (perhaps nodding at all the currency one has to drop to don Willhelm’s exclusive high-fashion club-wear) which are ironically, yet deftly, shredded and knotted back together. As usual, Willhelm’s visual references are endless: “California Creaming” printed on a stiff button-up or tee, graphic tees with 90’s super model slogans, models posed on printed pillows (remember the Givenchy AW’11 campaign?).
This endless post-modernism is evocative of sensory overload and psychedelia, making the collaboration with Lillemon even more appropriate. Lillemon’s art explores how both offline and online worlds are synonymous in today’s day and age, and how technology is ever more linked to indulging in new sensory experiences. Lillemon’s work allows Willhelm’s collection to be truly vested in the now by taking on new meaning and emotions.
