"Cheng-Huai Chuang was introduced to fashion at a young age"
R.I.P. Bill Cunningham
Bill Cunningham, Iconic Street Style Photographer, Passes away at 87
Last Saturday (June 25,) the fashion industry lost one of the greatest and most extraordinary fashion photographers of the past 50 years, Bill Cunningham, forever. He has died at the age of 87, after being hospitalized two weeks ago after having a stroke.
Always in his signature blue French worker’s jacket, khaki pants, and black sneakers while carrying a 35-milimeter Nikon and riding his bike, Cunningham was regarded as a living landmark of the city. He photographed fashion-forward passersby, both the famous and the unknown. He was such a classic figure in NYC. Now his unmistakable uniform and his inspirational approach to fashion photography will live on in our memories.
Being in charge of the “On the Street” column in The New York Times for nearly 40 years, Cunningham was more of a chronicler of clothing, who exemplified everything about the evolving world of fashion on the street. For him; however, he never really regards what he did as working. “It’s not work, it’s pleasure,” Bill Cunningham said a few years ago. “That’s why I feel so guilty. Everybody else does work — I have too much fun.”
The archive he dedicated his whole life to creating was a priceless gift he gave to the fashion community. Rest in peace Bill Cunningham!
