From October 21, 2016, to February 26, 2017, the Dutch design duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are hosting their fourth solo exhibition, Viktor & Rolf: Fashion Artists, at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
The show’s curator, Thierry-Maxime Loriot, considers the latest exhibition to be the first thorough survey of the Amsterdam-based designers’ near 25-year collaboration. The showing includes a broad spectrum of themes and concepts: The Emerging Artist, Hyères, Zen Garden, Performance of Sculptures, Cutting Edge Couture, Wearable Art, Red Carpet Dressing, Flowerbomb, Atomic Bomb, Blacklight, and Vagabonds.
In each, there are over 40 haute couture pieces featured, along with conceptual works, multimedia, and some of 21 Viktor & Rolf Victorian porcelain dolls. The assortments were curated to emphasize the duo's intricate and exemplary couture work. The highlights of the exhibit include a dress from the designers’ award-winning Hyères collection of 1993, Princess Mabel van Oranje-Nassau’s 2004 wedding dress, pieces from the fall 2005 “Bedtime Story,” several pieces from Fall 2007’s “The Fashion Show,” as well as the Fall 2008 “No” collection.
There are two, expansive Belgian tapestries, inspired by the designer’s press clippings. With an installation called “Timepiece,” guests can see Viktor & Rolf dolls rotating on and off of a miniature runway, making a statement on the contemporary fashion industry. The exhibition doesn’t fail to explore the elements that make Viktor & Rolf's designs unique through their long and innovative history.
Additionally, an interactive children’s craft workshop called Atelier: Viktor & Rolf for Kids, allows children, free of charge, to discover their wide-ranging imagination, invite curiosity, and an explore the inner workings of fashion. They can use a variety of materials inspired by Viktor & Rolf’s designs to fabricate their own paper creations. After dabbling in fashion design, the kids are encouraged to stage their own fashion shoots in one of three black-and-white dioramas – all culminating in Viktor & Rolf’s love of fantasy.
It’s easy to see their work on Instagram and the Internet, but to see almost 25 years of Viktor & Rolf's work is extraordinary. And what better place than Australia to travel for this occasion? But with any luck, the exhibition will travel to the Northern Hemisphere in the future.
