The history of VAN CLEEF & ARPELS began with a love story in 1895, ESTELLE ARPELS, the daughter of a precious stone merchant, got married with ALFRED VAN CLEEF, the son of a lapidary and diamond broker. Their passion for jewelry and the entrepreneurial vision led them into a business with Arpels’ brothers in 1906, and they opened a boutique at 22, Place Vendôme, which was renowned for its elegance and luxury in the area.
Since then, VAN CLEEF & ARPELS was born.
The second generation came on the scene in 1930s. CLEEF & ARPELS' daughter, RENEE PUISSANT, who marked the collection with the stamp of her inspired creativity. CLAUDE and JACQUES, the sons of ARPLES’ brother also joined this business in this time. After visiting to United State, they decided to set up in New York in 1939. Since then, VAN CLEEF& ARPELS has become a cross-cultural fusion of France and United States had to offer.
When designing a collection, the Maison starts with lots of cherished sources, seems like nature, couture, the imaginary, literature and the arts to build up a rich theme which full of imagination.
One of VAN CLEEF & ARPELS' iconic pieces is “THE ZIP NECKLACE” which delights in the art of diversion with a nice blend of humor and refinement, it can wear open as a necklace or zip up into a bracelet, which is a really piece of sensation, genuine and technical triumph artwork.
“Mystery SettingTM” is also an unique technical artwork associated with VAN CLEEF & ARPELS ever since the Maison patented this dazzling invention in 1933. It consists of setting stones in such a way that all the prongs are invisible, and because of the complex making process, it becomes extremely rare: the Maison produces no more than a few of them each year.
