Stella McCartney's longstanding commitment to maintain a business model with environmental impact in mind was employed way before the word "sustainability" became permanently fixed in the fashion industry's conscience. Eco-friendly sourcing and business practices aside, she manages to create practical yet desirable clothes grounded in a soulful and feminine sensibility.
Vegan leathers, or skin-free-skin as she calls it, looked positively radiant in a ruched, fitted black number on the bodice but also in a pair of supple, caramel trousers. She explored several categories of dressing, each with its own signature elements. Knits and chunky sweaters with roomy sleeves and generous cuts are classic McCartney, with her penchant for sensual off-the-shoulder and one-shoulder tops making another appearance. This season also saw an embrace of her playful side, with frilly dresses in colorful taffeta with dramatic necklines and a myriad of ruffles. Unafraid to experiment with prints, the bold, African-inspired motifs on display here lent an optimistic mood that dovetailed nicely with the acid-washed denim and neon skirts. The drawstring and toggle detail on waistlines and hems added a utilitarian touch to sheer organza dresses with patches of skin-free-skin applique as well as jumpsuits and jackets with heavy-duty appeal. Those looking for more of her smart tailoring from past seasons will find plenty of options in muted, double-breasted looks, filled with more of that ease in cut and sharp precision.
McCartney seemed to have many ideas this season, yet she succeeded in creating alluring, statement pieces in vivid hues and counter playing them with softer elements, truly a showcase of her incredible range. One not need to have values of sustainability ingrained as much as Stella to appreciate and lust after many of these exquisite garments.
