Damien Hirst is one of the most renowned contemporary British artists, best known for his assortment of “Circle” or “Dot” paintings which were first conceived in 1988 with the original painting: “Row.” Naturally, then, if the artist were to collaborate with any fashion label it would seem most fitting it would be The Row and their most infamous accessory: a crocodile backpack that sold out almost instantaneously (despite its $39,000 price tag). This season, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen of The Row produced 12 more of these luxurious beauties in specially sourced black patent Nile crocodile lined also in leather and allowed Hirst to have his way with them. Half of the backpacks feature different iterations of Hirst’s dot paintings which all took their original titles arbitrarily from Sigma-Aldrich’s catalogue, “Biochemicals for Research and Diagnostic Reagents,” such as “Opium” (1993), “Urea-13C” (2001-2006) and hundreds others (its been estimated that Hirst and his team have produced approximately 60 of such paintings each year since the idea's conception).
Obviously, also having a fascination with biochemicals and psychotropic substances, Hirst is also known for his pieces that featured painted resin and plaster prescription pills such as “In Search of Reality” (2007) and “The Dark Continent” (2009-2010). From afar the pill collages evoke the same feeling as his dot paintings and stem from Hirst’s “Pharmacy” installation that recreated a pharmacy inside London’s Tate Modern in 1992. The remaining six backpacks created for The Row take their inspiration from these iconic works incorporating various prescription drugs clad across the bags exterior. But don’t be fooled into thinking that The Row x Damien Hirst backpacks bolster an even higher price tag ($55,000) because real psychotropic drugs come included with purchase. The price hike is due to their limited edition, Hirst’s signature and additional personalized design element, and perhaps, most importantly, a portion of the proceeds benefiting UNICEF. These luxurious backpacks are sure to be collectors items for not only collectors of luxury fashion but art collectors as well. If you’re in the market for one of the most luxurious top-notch designer collaborations, the bags are available exclusively online at justoneeye.com (that is, if they haven’t already sold out).
