The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.
R13 NYFW F/W18 BACKSTAGE

R13's conception has been one shrouded in a certain kind of cool mystique. The brand built its unique reputation around the initial anonymity of its creative director, now known to be Chris Leba. In 2009, when R13 first launched under the creative direction of Leba, it began as a punk-chic denim brand that flew somewhat under the mainstream radar. Now, almost a decade later, R13 has a full assortment of clothing, denim and footwear that can be found at top retailers like Barneys and Totokaelo. Speaking on the inspiration behind the label, Leba has commented, ”It always stays with me, that feeling and sensibility, and it's also sort of timeless. Punk and grunge in different ways still exist in our culture.”
This season, Leba was inspired by nature, both in its elegance and chaos, and R13 presented its Fall-Winter 2018 collection as an homage to a new kind of classic American fashion. The label characterizes this audience as the “Other America” “whose importance often goes unrecognized, but in time comes to define the zeitgeist of an era.” A refined and simple approach defined the atmosphere of the show, as models donning shapely puffer jackets paired with landscape print dresses took to the runway. The show's theme kept it no-frills, and instead focused the spotlight on the preservation of wildlife. Specifically, that which makes America's natural parks so beautiful and worth protecting. For R13, what began as moto jackets, denim, and t-shirts has evolved into a diverse range of clothing— including outerwear, footwear, and flannels— all designed with unique and flattering natural shapes in mind. In light of this country’s many recent natural and manmade disasters dominating international attention, R13’s message of conservation delivered through fashion comes at a time when the global community is listening. We certainly are.
