We live in a highly politicized climate, and the fashion world is no exception. Instead of a bold, direct statement, Miuccia Prada took a lighter, more subtle tone in the women’s ready-to-wear Fall-Winter 2017 collection.
This subtle political expression was woven through the collection– one that in fact, was not subtle at all. In a retro, colorful, elaborate collection, Prada presents the woman as an entity, as a whole. Bright, playful tones were added to a warm color palette. Fine details were generous. Flowers, feathers, embroideries, beads and fringes created a beautiful complexity. Many of these elements we might expect in Spring-Summer collections, but perhaps Prada wants to free women from seasons, free them from any rules. The complexity of the collection mirrors the complex identity of women, which is certainly impossible to reduce to just one style. Prada also played with the contrast between soft fabrics and large volumes in the coats, skirts, hoods, and baker-boy caps. It was all about finding the delicate balance to a cozy-chic mix of suggested femininity.
The collection had a very strong late 60’s and 70’s vibe, lending itself well to the imaginative, retro atmosphere. The set was comprised of a series of young women’s bedrooms with walls covered in posters and pictures of women. It seemed to reflect on the elapsed time in a woman’s life– time during which some things haven’t changed. As women still fight for equality, we may wonder all that lays ahead. The models walked around the beds and chairs, living in the security and comfort of their make-believe bedrooms, wearing fabulous clothing, and ready to go out beyond the boiserie to the make-believe street, again ready to fight to change the world.
