Nicolas Ghesquière Named Louis Vuitton’s New Creative Director

Nicolas Ghesquière was announced as Louis Vuitton’s new creative director on November 4. There has been speculations about Ghesquière’s hire at the famous fashion house since Marc Jacobs stepped down in October, and now it is finally confirmed.
After 15 years as Balenciaga’s creative director, the french designer decided to leave Balenciaga last year, and as one of the fashion industry’s hottest designers, he was a popular candidate for the position at Louis Vuitton. Ghesquière leaving Balenciaga last year was surprising news in the fashion world as it was thought that the PPR’s (the company who owns the Balenciaga label) executives were satisfied with the work that Ghesquière did for their brand and all the kudos he received for his astonishing runway collections.
Ghesquière has been widely recognized in the fashion world, and already in 2001 he was named ”Womenswear Designer of the Year” by the CFDA. He was also featured in TIME’s ”100 Most Influential People of 2005”, and American Vogue has described him as ”fashion’s most sought-after and influential figure”.
Vuitton’s handbags remain one the cornerstone of the fashion house, and an exceptional good eye for handbags is thus a must for the new leader of Vuitton’s womenswear. There is no doubt though, that Louis Vuitton’s new creative director is capable of keeping the legendary ”it” bag’s reputation going. Ghesquière made his first purses for Balenciaga in 2001, and they became an instant success. Also new to Vuitton’s staff is accessories wizard Darren Spaziani, with whom Ghesquière has worked with at Balenciaga before.
There is no doubt that Nicolas Ghesquière will do an amazing job at Louis Vuitton, and we cannot think of anyone better suited to take over Marc Jacobs’ legacy at one of the fashion world’s most famous fashion houses.
