The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.

MOSCHINO: LET'S PLAY PAPER DOLL DRESS UP!

Since JEREMY SCOTT took the role as creative director of MOSCHINO, he has yet to fail to surprise us during fashion week each season, from sending models down the runway like real-life Barbies to serving McDonald’s on the catwalk and catching the show on fire. For the S/S 2017 show in Milan, he seemed to transform a child’s paper doll book into a reality. Everyone can remember how much fun it is to dress up paper dolls, folding back the little white tabs around the doll’s body allowing an endless number of outfits cut from paper. Thanks to Scott, our dolls came to life. Models including GIGI and BELLA HADID, STELLA MAXWELL, IRINA SHAYK, and ROMEE STRIDJ strutted down the runway in polka dotted dresses, swimsuits, pussy bow blouses, and trompe l'oeil looks, complete with white paper tags and cut-out accessories like chain belts and pearl earrings. It seemed as though tricks were being played on the eyes of show attendees, as the paper dolls surreally came to life. A one-piece dress mimics a blouse and cardigan belted over a skirt with pearls. A one-piece swimwear gives an illusion that it is a bikini, accessorized with a face-framing paper sunhat, beach towel, and camera. The final evening wear parade was an especially dramatic spectacle. Models strode the runway in cardboard cut-out, old-school gowns with printed ruffles. When they turn, it is revealed that all the dresses have blank, white backs. A two-dimensional world has never felt so real!
