On the final day of Paris Fashion Week, Miuccia Prada swept fashion connoisseurs into a teenage dream at the Miu Miu Fall-Winter 2017 ready-to-wear show. For the designer’s more spontaneous sister company of Prada, the imaginative collection manifested an endless ebullience of psychedelic prints and typical, retro-playful Miu Miu hues. This cozy fantasy allured both the old and young into a daydream that one could only hope was reality.
Guests entered Auguste Perret’s Palais d’Iéna atop plush, purple eco-fur carpeting, emanating a warmth and quirky lushness to the otherwise cold, concrete and marble venue. The fanciful, purple fur spread across the seating and a grand staircase before climbing the soaring columns that outlined the runway.
A jazz soundtrack introduced the Miu Miu girls in swaths of real and faux furs of a pastel palette comprised of soft pinks, lavenders, blues, and greens. Gatsby-esque crystalscontributed a pop of glitz, painting the epitome of modern glamour. Kitten and floral-printed dresses, eskimo boots, bold fur shoulders, and fuzzy newsboy caps all made appearances. Oversized jackets and sleek jumpsuits were given a feminine twist, while high-tech fabrics and plastic trenches were perceived as the “new cool.” This juxtaposition of heavy texture and carefree, 1970s-inspired attitude was decidedly woven throughout the presentation.
The Fall-Winter collection also marked an attempt at more diverse casting by the Italian heritage brand. Alongside the familiar Kendall Jenner, fresh faces like Yeezy modelJasmine Daniels, 18-year-old, Nigerian model Elizabeth Ayodele, and Cayman-born Aaliyah Hydes graced the runway. Admiring from the celebrity-filled, front row, sat actresses Aja Naomi King, Stacy Martin and Lara Stone; fashion influencers Chiara Ferragni, Olivia Palermo, Poppy Delevingne, and Anna Dello Russo; as well as Maisie Williams, the potential new face of the brand.
Miu Miu’s whimsical dream of a collection again reminds us that fashion can still be daringly fun and carefree while retaining a luxurious sophistication. Even in confusing times of political distress and instability, the collection serves as a cue to remain collected and uplifted– a message that Miuccia Prada delivered with great success in yet another masterful curation of femininity, beauty, and glam.
