KOTOBA: Fashion Sustainability Meets Punk-Prep Knitwear

Representing absolutely no garment excess waste, made exclusively in America, and controlled attitude, Kotoba’s FW’13 Form & Allusion collection is hard not to get excited about. Fresh-faced head designers Lindsay Mann and Melinda Danko teamed up with Shima Seiki to create an in-house brand of sustainable knitwear using the company’s WHOLEGARMENT technology. Since the garments are preprogrammed into a computer, the machine knits the garment using only the precise amount of wool required with no seams.
You may have heard of this 100 percent no waste knitting process since Shima Seiki boasts clients like Oscar de la Renta and The Row. Mann & Danko took the revolutionary knitting process one step further with their Form & Allusion collection by creating a felting process that gives the allusion of woven knitwear. Using this one of a kind process, they married that with the intricate and beautiful lines found in the human form. The knitwear mimics the woven aspects of human muscle with cutouts that layer like a ribcage. These details give the pieces an altogether rough urban edginess that most would associate with a traditionally punk style. But they’ve managed to mix in an updated suit set, wrap cardigan, and wrap dress with the same edginess. You know, just in case you were ready to retire your shredded The Clash t-shirt without compromising your inner punk rock attitude.
