The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.
Jill Stuart NYFW F/W18 Presentation: Video and Backstage

The anticipation and excitement buzzing from the queue that formed outside of an 1840’s brownstone in Gramercy Park could be felt blocks away. But inside the Tilden Mansion (of former New York governor Samuel Tilden), now home to the National Arts Club, a much more intimate affair was afoot. This New York Fashion Week, Jill Stuart strayed from a traditional runway showing for her Fall-Winter 2018 collection, and the anything-but-bourgeois venue made home for an experience that felt like a turn of the nineteenth century film.
The wooded interior of the National Arts Club is decadently furnished with oil paintings, statuettes, and other divine ornamentation. The Jill Stuart girls relished in the environment, playing cards, backgammon, and chess. One model awaited a phone call from a pale pink landline, while another contently took to a sketchbook. Tea and cookies with collection-specific floral imprints sat on plates throughout the warmly lit interior, but guests were treated to champagne as they meandered through the historic reenactment.
A remarkable vocalist-pianist pair performed a live rendition throughout the night, but the highlight of the presentation was indeed Stuart’s romantic offering of brocade coats, rich floral dresses, velvet corsets, and brown calf-grazing riding boots.
