Not every brand is able to host a fashion show at Westminster Abbey, one of the most sacred churches in Britain. For Gucci and only for Gucci, the answer was "yes." This 700-year-old church hosted countless guests for weddings (Prince William wed Kate Middleton's,) funerals (Princess Diana,) and coronations (Queen Elizabeth II,) but never ever has it hosted a fashion event. Alessandro Michele acknowledged that he thought he was dreaming when he considered Westminster Abbey as the venue for his cruise 2017 collection. “Westminster Abbey is something very romantic in a way; it’s that kind of unknown Gothic place full of history,” the designer explained.
Michele is an anglophile with no doubt. “I love the English aesthetic; in a way I feel it is close to my own, a beautiful chaos, it is a powerful mix of the past and the present,” he said of his inspiration. His love of England can be spotted everywhere in the collection: Union jack sweater,s rain bonnets, trenchcoats, punk plaids, etc. Despite the English aesthetic, the embroidered hoodies, soccer jerseys, striped athletic socks, and rainbow platforms that made their way down the runway have totally proven -- the designer seems to have a certain “granny-ish” aesthetic as well.
It was a vast, astonishing show of a full 96 (ninety six!) looks. Each one of them was so magnificently detailed that there was just so much to zoom in on: fist size peacock earrings and jewelry-like turbans; a snow-bleached denim with rose and tiger embroidery; a floor-length black dress that has red snakes with black and white stripes slithering around the chest; a black punky jacket with rainbow-colored studs. In case this all seems too plain, there are also cats and dogs, either embroidered or appliqued throughout the collection. The show’s very first look combined a cosmic cat applique with rainbow stripes of lace for the top, and a sparkling embroidered dog with yellow gothic plaid for the skirt.
It is the kind of collection that will take time to digest. But it is worth every minute. Check out all the looks!
