The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.
Genius of Nature: Randomness and Pattern @ Aaron Faber Gallery

“Goldsmithing is the same act of creation as a plant growing or the universe expanding: it is organic, cosmic and perfectly natural,” describes exhibition curator Patricia Kiley Faber at Aaron Faber Galleries on 5th Avenue. The Genius of Nature Randomness & Pattern show was just that, an exhibition of organic designs where each designer shared their own inspirations and stories connecting to one common theme: the randomness of creation.
TWELV had the opportunity to speak with a few of the designers at the gallery cocktail reception to learn what inspires their unique jewelry collections.
Roland Dubac, a Montreal native, describes his pieces as organic in both form and evolution. His inspiration comes from everything around him; even buttons on a shirt or a detail on a pair of eyeglasses can come together as inspiration and transform into a sculpture in his hands. His technique is to use a single piece of raw material and from that he’ll mold and sculpt until the final form emerges. Inspirations are fluid and so are his pieces.
Italian designer Gigi Mariani uses his beautifully simplistic pieces to express emotions and does so from raw silver molded together with polished silver and gold. His Flower Ring, a large ball formed from raw silver, is carefully surrounded with petals of polished metal to create a uniquely contrasting piece that is visibly heavy but light as feather to the touch.
Linda Priest, a veteran to the gallery, also draws her inspiration from nature. Her jewelry comes in two parts: The top of the sculpture is that of an animal, and the bottom is made from a stone that tells a story and environment of the life form. The Bullfinch Pendant for example has a gold bird with an amethyst colored stone that Linda particularly chose because of it’s unique shape. The stone’s texture is then softened to the point that makes it look almost soft to the touch.
For the artists we interviewed, the organic world provides inspiration for beauty and creation. Creativity in its truest form is essentially organic and random, which ignited these special collections. The pieces at the Genius of Nature show will be on exhibition at Aaron Faber Gallery from October 3rd through October 26th.
