For the fashion industry, magic materializes twice a year emerging from the runways, seeping through Manhattan, and this season, extending over the East River to Brooklyn. TWELV is eagerly anticipating many aspects of New York Fashion Week. The celebrities, street style gods, after parties, but mostly the collections and the designers who are mixing it up order to stay relevant and stand out during the extensive, week-long event.
Alexander Wang’s first-time stint in Brooklyn is said to be the result of an essential conspiracy between the collection itself and Brooklyn’s Duggal Greenhouse. He is one of the only designers showing in New York with enough clout to burden elite industry players off the island during the high season of glamour mayhem. The scorned logistics of the show will be remedied only if Wang’s creative vision transcends expectations while production goes off without a hitch. Although Wang’s relocating is causing a stir, other designers are making less dramatic changes for this season’s shows.
Jill Stuart enlisted stylist Camille Bidault-Waddington to dust the final touch on to this season’s presentation. Waddington has previously dazzled advertising campaigns for Chloe and Marc Jacobs. Her signature breezy edge will bring a bit of rebellious spirit to Stuarts signature feminine looks. The fall-winter collection will connect with Stuart’s loyal fans while appealing to the cutting edge generation with its inherent air of Parisian cool. Inspiration for this season is an it-girl outgrowing her wildest days but retaining a dash of grit in her reformation. The combination of Stuart’s girly signature in addition to Waddington’s new wave styling will surely celebrate the it-girl in all of us.
While Stuarts collection is a positive reflection of a modern culture, a breakthrough designer, Caroline Fuss, designing for Harare is using her designs and textiles to have a silent conversation about decaying sustainability of artisan cultures worldwide. She uses textiles from Guatemala and handmade canvases of Peruvian alpaca in hopes of bringing attention to the process of garment construction to consumers. The Proenza Schouler alum launched the collection for a greater congregation than the luxurious fashion industry; it began as a project aimed to provide tools and finances for female artisans worldwide to sustain their dwindling art-forms. This fall-winter collection is inspired by the work of expressionist’s artists and the feelings that stem from their geometric redundancies. Her deliberate use of eco-rich textiles is a refreshing reminder of the value of true quality during one of the most flashy weeks of the year.
