THE GOLDEN CHILD
We all love the holiday season. People seem to glow with happiness. They eagerly spend time with loved ones, eat delicious food, and wait anxiously for Santa. We all prepare to start a new year, hoping that it will be OUR year– the best one we ever had– because let’s be honest, we deserve it.
Christmas songs can be heard all over the city. Subtle scents of apple cider and gingerbread cookies tickle our noses. The streets we walk are beautifully illuminated with gentle light, and everything around sparkles with excitement and joy– it almost feels magical. “The golden child” puts the spotlight on Marina Nery in this stunning editorial. Her stare is mesmerizing as we follow her steps in the streets of New York, hypnotized by shimmering gold clothing and an energy that seems to radiate from within. A sparkle in her eye is the only indication of where she is headed. She turns right. We follow, and it is clear that she is having fun. Her energy travels into our hearts.
Turning another corner, we try to get closer, but she feels forever out of reach. Subconsciously, we take wider and wider strides. Turning again, she seems to vanish, leaving nothing more behind than remnants of a sparkling powder. Looking around, we ask ourselves, “Where did she go?” We wait for a moment, arms dangling, a dazed look upon our faces. We try to retain the fleeting memory. Marina, her eyes, her light, her shining presence, her fabulous clothes, the gold and the glimmer. But none of it is here anymore. Was it all a dream? Was she an apparition? A mirage? A Christmas spirit?
We will probably never know, we realize, and with that, we clasp our arms together, crossing them on our chest to discourage the winter’s fierce cold from entering our bodies. It is time to return home to our loved ones, to gather around the glistening tree, and perhaps to murmur the story of a Christmas angel we once saw.
