VASILISA IN DKNY
For DKNY, the devil has always been in the details. The New York-based brand has made a name in the industry by defying the conventions of modern sexiness and celebrating the subtle beauty in the basics. Inspired by the naïveté of youth culture, the collection is characterized by transparent fabrics and cropped sweaters which seem to scorn conventions of appropriate dress codes. As the iconic fashion house parts ways with LVMH officially, it must also bid farewell to some of its most vital leaders. Public School designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow along with chief executive Caroline Brown announced their plans of departure soon after the brand was sold from its long-time parent company. And while parting with the past may be somewhat heavy, the style of their last collection was as light-hearted as its airy fabrics.
Dancing on the border of flamboyant and understated, the Spring-Summer 2017 look seems to find a happy medium between “doing the most” and keeping it casual. Raincoats are paired with dark athleisure wear. A sheer black tracksuit and platform sneakers are undeniably sexy, yet still possess a relaxed, cool-girl playfulness. Bright tangerine color blocking and rigid, linear hemlines are somehow completely in sync with the blasé posture of the barefaced beauty wearing them.
While some of fashion’s biggest maisons aim to normalize their ostentatious trends from the runway, DKNY has stayed true to their less adorned, nonetheless ultra-chic heritage, and it fits the 2017 aesthetic like a glove. The brand breaks the classroom rules and avoids all the consequences with this gullible-polished look. In the true spirit of spring and new life, DKNY takes us to a place where we want to celebrate the natural refinement of carefree adolescence. It’s time for recess in the urban jungle.
