Rihanna creates new Star Trek inspired sunglasses with Christian Dior.
After Rihanna’s web-crashing collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, Puma, and Stance Socks, the 28-year-old singer has joined force with Dior to launch a brand new futuristic sunglasses collection, simply entitled Rihanna. This is her second collaboration with Dior (last year’s Secret Garden IV campaign was the first.) However, as one of Dior’s ambassadors – others are Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillar, Charlize Theron – she is the first one that has actually been involved in a designing role with Dior’s team.
Mathieu Jamin, Dior’s eyewear designer, commented that he was not let down in the slightest, but rather impressed by Rihanna’s “level of involvement.” He explained, “She chose all the materials. We had a lot of different samples with different effect of metals. She chose all the lenses and took time to match all the colors together to see if it was right on her face. It was really important to her.” He said that the finished products are strong and unique.
The collection is said to be inspired by Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation. "I've always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together," Rihanna told WWD.
Designed with pure lines and futuristic accents in a range of metallized colors, this new sunglasses collection will hit the stores in early June. The collection will include six colorways: silver, pink, blue, green, and red ($840 each), plus a luxury 24-karat-gold-plated variation ($1,950).
