The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.
CHRISTIAN DIOR F/W2014 COUTURE COLLECTION

RAF SIMONS travelled back in time to bring us modern clothes at the CHRISTIAN DIOR 2014 COUTURE show on July 7. The designer, new to haute couture, presented a collection that spanned not decades but centuries. Marie Antoinette-inspired pannier silhouettes of the opening, astronauts’ jumpsuits, embroidered court jackets, and twenties looks were all a part of the show.
SIMONS strayed away from the traditional runway presentation, showcasing eight mini collections within one show on Monday. Each group took turns walking onto the circular catwalk that resembled a helipad. The models emerged and disappeared from four doors that acted as portals in the curved mirrored wall covered in white orchids. The first group to appear was the 18th-century-inspired silk gown with delicate embroidery, followed by party dresses with tiny waists; astronauts’ jumpsuits with flower embroidery and zippers; floor-length Edwardian coats and furs; delicate skirt suits; and ended with pretty chiffon cocktail dresses.
The models walked on set in a circular motion allowing the clothes to be viewed from all angles, which ultimately displayed the intricate detailing on each garment. What’s most impressive about the designs is how SIMONS managed to keep them modern despite his referencing of historical silhouettes. Another plus, is some of his creations such as the frock coats can be worn as every-day pieces. Surely, celebrities such as JENNIFER LAWRENCE, EMMA WATSON, and MARION COTILLARD, who wear all in attendance, will be wearing couture DIOR on and off the red carpet.
