Karl Lagerfeld has done it once again with an impressive “launch” of Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2017 ready-to-wear collection. The imaginative designer left no stones unturned in producing a full-fledged, intergalactic fashion show, life-sized (and life-like) rocket ship included. The spaceship was set atop a launch pad in the center of the Grand Palais in Paris. Following a digitally inspired Spring-Summer runway show last season, Lagerfeld continues to explore futuristic and technological themes.
Black patent, cap-toed boots in glistening silver, gold, and white metallics served as the Chanel crew’s moon boats. Astronaut-inspired and perfectly round, high necks were seen throughout the collection, while tweed came in all colors with glistening hints of metallic thread. Lagerfeld presented his version of the very of-the-moment oversized, puffer jacket in a trio of metallic colors that were worn over the shoulders as if to reflect solar rays. Crystal and faux pearl- embroidered headbands pushed back tall waves of hair. Midway through the presentation, models bounced across the runway in playful planetary and astronaut prints, only to transition into a finale of evening looks no less cosmically-imagined than those that preceded.
Lagerfeld explains the presentation, noting “It’s a journey through the sky, to the heart of constellations, in the wake of the astronaut Thomas Pesquet.” The collection undoubtedly sent the audience into contemplation of the much-needed break we all may want from this planet. The show was attended by Chanel ambassadors Vanessa Paradis, Pharrell Williams, Lily-Rose Depp, Cara Delevingne, Caroline de Maigret, Alice Dellal, Bai Bai He, William Chan and Nana Komatsu, singer Lily Allen, and a number of notable French and American actresses, all who enjoyed the extravagant sight of the rocket ship’s launch after a countdown was grandly put into action by Lagerfeld’s press of a large, red button. As the smoke and noise of the launch subsisted, it was as though a shooting star had just vanishes. Everyone yearned to see the stunning collection just for one moment longer. Surely, they did not– the spectacle was complete– but we look forward to seeing the collection in stores next season.
