Chanel flew in 700 people for its 2017 cruise collection in Havana on the island of Cuba. The event itself was a first time in many aspects: the first Chanel show in Latin America, the first fashion show in Cuba, and for Karl Lagerfeld, his first time coming to the island. Paseo del Prad, one of Havana’s oldest avenues, was the chosen place that had been transformed from a tree-lined boulevard into a glossy private catwalk with colorful colonial buildings along side. According to Chanel’s press release, it actually symbolized the links that uniting Cuba and France: “the Prado was redesigned in 1982 by a French landscape architect.”
If the choice of venue seems too implicit, Karl made it all clear to everyone on how he spun the romantic French style with Cuban motifs in a piece of clothing. First thing to notice is the vibrant colors -- yellow, pink, orange, turquoise, bright green -- inspired by the baroque facades of Havana, sparkling over every look. Then there was the Chanel version of Guayabera, a kind of open-necked men’s shirt that is popular in the Caribbean regions: diaphanous blouses in black, white and mint green; sheer calf-length organza dresses in gray with big strategically placed pockets; and Chanel jackets with neat vertical pleats. On the latter, a Chanel signature bouclé jacket that was rendered in vibrant hues was paired with a souvenir T-shirt that has “Viva Coco Libre” slogan on it. The collection riffed on a casual Cuban attitude by letting models wear woven flip-flops, flat sandals, pearl-clustered slides to match dresses and suites throughout the show.
After all, the whole collection was totally wearable, expertly made, and cheerfully youthful.
