Brazilian designer, Alexandre Birman, has been making quite a stir lately with his eponymous shoe label, which was founded in Brazil in 2008 and is now produced primarily in Italy. In 2010 Birman gained more exposure and respect in the industry when collaborating on a shoe collection with Prabal Gurung and his mainline is currently sold at luxury retailers worldwide. Birman’s shoes are best known for their intricate craftsmanship and deft incorporation of exotics like python, lizard, and ostrich. For his most recent Pre-Fall 2013 outing, Birman continued pushing the use of signature exotics: pointy-toed sling backs gained a touch of the artisanal with hand painted stripes of bold turquoise, magenta, and persimmon. Flesh toned python was a re-curring theme on everything from minimal flats to accenting the heel of a peep toe pump. Another standout was a pair of python heeled sandals incorporating braided straps of orange suede and onyx python around the ankle and instep. For Pre-Fall Birman also stepped away from his signature python and created classic pumps, kitten heels, and pointed flats in a palette of black, persimmon, and amethyst leather and suede. These wardrobe staples had slightly subversive details like an asymmetrically structured toe or a hidden platform giving the illusion that mere three-inch pumps were six-inch glamazon stompers. Moving into evening, Birman brought back his signature python in caged metallic open toed booties, and d’orsays adorned with flathead nails, which from afar, gave the illusion of studs or even crystals. Birman pointed out this collection was designed with versatility in mind; each shoe effortlessly could transition from daytime to evening as well as accommodate temperate summers shifting to brisker autumnal days. What better way to nail the purpose of Pre-Fall?
