"Behind the scenes of TWELV Magazine's inspired creations"
TWELV’S office was transformed into a design studio for the creation and shooting of the “Metro Girl.” Editor-in-Chief, HISSA IGARASHI, utilized over 3,000 metro cards to create the 6-ft-tall gown inspired by a yellow, bellowing, Alexander McQueen Spring ’13 ready-to-wear dress. First, he built the wiring that acted as a mold. Next, the blue and yellow metros were attached to the metal framing until a piece of art emerged. The gown towered over its designer, the photographer, and all the photo shoot assistants once it was built. But the piece truly came alive when the slender WILHELMINA model started posing in it.
The excitement and enthusiasm for the project was felt in the room and everyone anticipated the results. The metro cards shimmered as the lights bounced off its surface creating an awe-inspiring effect. Flowers also made of metros were attached to the gown, which broke up the rigidness of the piece, giving it a feminine touch. After hours of creating and shooting, the final product materialized and the creative team could not have been more please. The “Metro Girl” was a success.
Each day, millions of commuters with varying backgrounds use the metro card to travel around NYC. The travel card has become symbol of these differing stories and the “Metro Girl” is a union of those backgrounds coming together to represent fashion and art simultaneously. The piece, which was featured in TWELV’s fourth issue “Muse,” is one of the many artworks that have been designed by IGARASHI.
