"Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier" at the Design Museum

The Design Museum in London has curated a new design exhibition in honor and exploration of the late designer Azzedine Alaia. Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier is the first exhibition of Alaïa in the United Kingdom and provides an intimate look into the story of one of the greatest and most respected fashion designers in history. Known for his iconic design method of draping and sculpting each of his pieces by hand, Alaia’s works were tailor-made on his models, redefining the relationship between a designer and his clothing.
The exhibit explores Alaia’s personal approach to design—delving into the intricate world of his muses, models, clients and friends surrounding and supporting his atelier. Recognized throughout his career as a master couturier, Alaia expressed the many nuances of woman’s beauty through the most refined degree of haute couture. This narrative exhibition presents the profound ethos of each piece of clothing and the exquisite nature of collaboration that surrounded the maverick designer.
Over 60 rare garments created over the course of his career are on display, including the zipped dress, the bandage dress, the corset belt, and the stretch body. Alongside these samples are a series of specially commissioned pieces by leading designers. Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier is a tribute to both an integral part of the fashion world, and the man who made it possible.
