Art and Excess: Chanel S/S2014 Collection

Karl Lagerfeld’s SS 14 collection for Chanel was youthful and playful in its celebration of art and excess. Structured jackets set the mood for what would be a woman’s dream combination of print, pattern and texture, reminiscent of what many expect from the fashion house. By the middle of the show, tradition was abandoned for exaggerated proportions still capable of being paired with grandmother’s pearls. Pale blues, grays and pinks contrasted stark additions of magenta, blue, and black that reminded the audience of the wearability of the luxurious collection, one garment and accessory at a time. Cross-body purses were compact and conservative while the oversized pearl necklaces presented a new take on the timeless staple. Geometric bangles adorned the models' wrists near statement-making fingerless gloves and dark nail polish. Even though black and white was an important color component for this show, Lagerfeld closed with collaged rainbow dresses and skirts featuring playful straps, flouncy A-lines, and the calf length socks with round toed heels that he styled for this new season.
Artisitic influence was not only apparent in the clothes though; the application of eye makeup suggested a very painterly quality, indicative of Abstract Expressionism with strong impasto and color. Art lovers everywhere can appreciate this beautiful, complicated collection that stood out amongst many others this season.
