You might not have noticed, but back in early October, right between The Highline, all the meatpacking district nightlife hotspots, and the Chelsea projects, a new designer boutique opened up at 229 10th Avenue just north of West 23rd street. The boutique is Amelia Toro, the Colombian born, RISD and Parsons trained, designer ‘s first North American flagship. The boutique is clean and streamlined: its interior alabaster walls and ceilings, concrete floors, and brushed aluminum fixtures are on display to Chelsea passersby thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass windows. At first the boutique might even be mistaken for a modernist art gallery.
While this is Toro’s first North American flagship, the Amelia Toro brand is not new to the realm of fashion. Toro originally was employed as design assistants to Pino Lancetti and Gianfranco Ferre in Europe, before she returned to Bogota in 1991 and established her eponymous label. Feeling strong ties to her native Colombia, Toro maintains production of her minimalist and feminine collections in Colombia. By employing single mothers, she provides her artisans and craftswomen with economic stability to better provide for themselves and their children. Each of Toro’s garments is individually “signed” by the seamstress who crafted them, adding a personal touch to each special piece. The Amelia Toro woman feels pride wearing these clothes, knowing that her purchase is not only fashionable, but goes to support the empowerment of other women.
The accompanied photos are some of the highlights from Amelia Toro’s most recent Spring/Summer 2013 outing. Her garments are modern and feminine but also contain small intricate details that nod at her Colombian heritage, such as indigenous beaded accents and patterned handbags. The juxtaposition lends to timeless, wearable clothes. If you can’t wait for Toro’s SS’13 collection to hit stores, drop by the Chelsea boutique. Or you can also find her AW’12 collection at Saks Fifth Avenue, Ikram, Maxfield, and If.
