The runway is a facade for designers to stage their vision, the strictly choreographed back-and-forth of models shinning a never-ending flow of clothes.

The Ever-Changing Alexander McQueen
On top of a steely building underneath an enormous big plastic dome in which rippled walls crinkled in the breeze and tent posts creaked like an empty swing in a storm, rose the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2022 runway collection. Storming on the runway in chunky boots and a doubled-breasted tailored coat in black wool with a cloud bustle and sleeves in black poly faille, the first look descended like rolling thunder upon the live audience. Creative Director Sarah Burton likened this collection to storm chasing and was inspired by the everchanging sky and views from the top of the building in which the studio resides. Participants were immersed in the weather and all-encompassing views of the city from Saint Paul’s Cathedral to the London Eye. The collection combined modernistic minimalistic styling with an impressive array of construction details such as billowing sleeves, bustled pleats, puffy skirts, transparent cut outs, cinched waist ruching, trailing ribbons and exaggerated shoulder suiting with zipper embellishments. The McQueen woman of this collection is a passionate individual who boldly carries herself unapologetically stomping through her universe where her community lies.

Like the unpredictable skies that inspired these looks, the colors of the collection ran from daybreak brights to night fall blues, neutral cool tones interrupted by the occasional flash of electric color such as the neon pink leather bodice with skirt or the sunshine yellow silk off-the-shoulder corset dress. Altogether, The McQueen Spring/Summer show offered a lively unfolding of inventive shaping and mysterious dynamic looks, as unpredictable and beautiful as mother nature herself.
