THE BUTTERFLY COLLECTION
Azzedine Alaïa understood that the free and eternal beauty of a woman was often hidden in the designs of nature.
The Alaïa Special Project Collections grow from a particular event or idea that is framed within the larger aesthetic picture of the Maison.
In this case, Azzedine Alaïa’s innate love and respect for nature and wildlife that was for him a symbol of freedom now brings forward The Special Project Butterfly Collection.
As was his habit, Mr. Alaïa worked late every evening with the National Geographic Channel always on. The beauty, strength of movement, and humor of animals was always an inspiration for him. Throughout his career he introduced this playful bestiary into his collections, clearly seen in the parallel inspirations of the leopard, the panther, the crocodile, and the always engaging and free butterfly.
For his 1991 collection, Alaïa synthesized his thoughts on the beauty of the butterfly. Transforming this vision of freedom into a butterfly print that not only expressed the beauty and grace of nature, but a new and feral sense of animal magnetism. For that one brief season, butterflies ruled the runway.
The Alaïa Butterfly Special Project Collection is comprised of knitwear dresses and tops, silk dresses, shirts, scarves, gloves and accessories.
