No make-up company has a more storied history firmly ensconced in New York showbiz.
R.I.P Chek Wu
We at TWELV are deeply saddened to announce the passing of talented photographer, boundless free-spirit, and our friend, Chek Wu.
After a courageous, year-long battle with cancer, Chek left us on October 26, 2018, in his New York City home with his devoted partner, Jenavieve Gardner, by his side. The family held a traditional Buddhist ceremony for him, inviting monks from Tibet House to chant for his spirit while countless loved ones said their goodbyes. He was buried in Valhalla, New York, beside his mother and other family members.
Chek was born in Salvador, Brazil, where his interest in photography emerged at an early age. After moving to New York as a teenager, he continued to develop his natural, creative talent, eventually leading him to an education at the School of Visual Arts in New York. From there he got his first break in the fashion industry as an assistant to renowned photographer, Robert Erdmann, traveling the world and honing his lighting and technical skills. Chek’s talent and carefree spirit made him an icon in the industry as he continued working with top stylists, creative directors, models, artists, and celebrities throughout his career.
He became well known for both his photographic aptitude and his lighthearted, playful demeanor, always serious about his work but never taking himself too seriously. As an early cofounder of TWELV, Chek’s photography was featured in issues 1 through 4, including three covers and countless stunning editorials over the years.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends he has left behind. He may no longer be with us, but his remarkable legacy and memory will live on. Rest in peace, Chek, you will be forever missed.
Love,
The TWELV Team
