MARGIELA RAISES AIDS AWARENESS IN CHINA
Although Martin Margiela himself left the brand years ago, many of his legacies still remain: the deconstruction, the highly conceptualized clothing that would have historical materialist philosopher Walter Benjamin entranced for days, and the iconic AIDS awareness T-shirt. A staple in his collection since AW’94, the T, only when folded, reads: “There is more action to be done to fight AIDS than to wear this T-shirt but it’s a good start.” For the past several years to commemorate World AIDS day (December 1st) the Maison has released the T-shirt in French, Spanish, and Japanese to raise AIDS awareness on the global frontier. Continuing this tradition, this year a grey on grey limited edition T-shirt will be released and exhibited at the Maison shops in China, sporting the cheeky slogan in Chinese. The T-shirt’s slogan is abstracted when worn, as to distort the message and stimulate curiosity and questions leading to conversations about and awareness of AIDS. As with all of the Margiela AIDS T-shirts, portions of the proceeds go to AIDES. AIDES is the first French non-profit for AIDS started by Daniel Defert in 1984 in honor of his partner Michel Foucault, the famous philosopher, who lost his life to the disease.
