"LIGHTS CAMERA FASHION" PARIS MENS WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

February 01, 2013 8:24 PM
As each year continues to spin on its axis, fashion madness seems to be on its own path to discovery. Sadly, although I did not make it to Paris (cue melancholy violin music) to see the action upfront, we're all fortunate to have access to a plethora of media outlets to see whose the next prom queen of fashion: and don’t we all want to be prom queen. Finally, as Paris Fashion Week came to an end and NYFW is on its way (upgrade your Starbucks house account because we were up all night in utter amazement of the collections coming up for fall)   some of our favorite designers: Dries Van Noten, Dior Homme, Juun J, Rick Owens, & Raf Simons, had us itching out our fashion addiction. To sum up what the prescient menswear shows afflicted us with... well it's utterly deadly. Here’s the constant theme we saw with the designers: the Fifth Element jacked up on Redbull. We can hear Andy Warhol screaming from the ground below: "Let  me out!" because these designers are of the crop that would seriously be his muses. While Dries van Noten focused on bringing back a tailored Monte Carlo 60's look, Juun J and Rick Owens focused on a more grunge aesthetic, channeling their inner witch from The Craft. Look out Nancy, they put a spell on you, or at least us. Heresy is here, and our religion is compromised. Focusing on muted colors, leather asymmetrical bulky coats, and neoprene pullovers, layering was such a key component to their look.

On the other hand, Raf Simons ironically went the other way showing his inner "Emo" side with a collection influenced perhaps by happy go lucky psychotropic’s, at the maturest and sophisticated of levels (as we've come to expect from this champ). Having his constant theme of quizzical darkness and aesthetically juxtaposed paradoxes,  we were shocked yet amused with the splashes of color he threw into his preppily grunge garb.

At Dior Homme, Kris van Assche also presented an interestingly cerebral collection.  He presented a basic yet ironic upbeat take on classically tailored sportswear. Simple suits, masculine rich inky blues and blacks, slim silhouettes --it was all Star Trek gone upscale luxe: "beam me up Scotty." Its pleasantry was quite refreshing; as every now and then you will see a designer like van Assche, with such a long history of menswear prowess, turn classic masculine staples and update them in the most forward way possible. He's paving the way for seriously new approaches to menswear.

While we sip espresso and eat baguettes in our garment center office (yes even we need to indulge in fantasy), the magic of these designers is captivating. They make us wonder, where can mens fashion head in ten years from now? Will it be out of this world, or will it be a revamped design of classically cool? You decide.
